MEDIA RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Artist captures 125 Kiwi Women
Re-igniting the stories of extraordinary New Zealand Wāhine
NEW ZEALAND, March - September 2018 (Our Wāhine) –Auckland-based artist Kate Hursthouse has begun illustrating 125 extraordinary New Zealand women in celebration of the 125th anniversary of Women’s suffrage in New Zealand.
Alongside Kate’s illustrations, her mother Karen Brook researches and writes the profiles of Our Wāhine to rekindle the stories of New Zealand’s women in history.
No longer relegated to black and white text laden history books, the full colour, bold and vibrant illustrations offer an exciting new interpretation of these women.
The aim is to showcase inspiring kiwi women of all ages and backgrounds while making history accessible, easy to digest and empowering.
The stories include change-makers such as ‘Queen of the Cosmos’ Beatrice Tinsley , chieftainess and peacemaker Rangi Toperoa ’, Antartic scientist Rosemary Askin and filmmaker Merata Mita.
The mother-daughter team launched the Our Wāhine campaign on March 8th 2018 (International Women’s Day) and will continue working on the project until September 19th 2018 (the 125th anniversary of New Zealand women being granted the right to vote).
The project is being rolled out across social media platforms and a dedicated website.
During the campaign Kate and Karen will connect with as many women-led organisations as possible to raise awareness and further strengthen New Zealand’s female connections. “With the collective help of women across New Zealand, we can ensure that these stories do not get lost”, says Kate.
Our Wāhine will become a valuable online resource and the end goal is for the illustrations and profiles to be published into a book for all ages.
